My Favorite April Fools Day Story…except this story is ‘No Joke!’

When April Fools Day rolls around I always smile. I always think about the infamous story I heard my parents tell. And every time I heard it, I loved it all the more.

April fools day was my due date. Not my son's, but mine. My Mom was not at all pleased.

By the time it was coming up, she was bound and determined to make sure somehow I was not born on this day. I’m really not sure why she was so upset about the whole thing, but she definitely was. I don’t think my Father could have cared less, but here is my understanding of what happened around this time...

Sometime around the end of March my Mom got the brilliant idea to do jumping jacks…(while nine months pregnant.) Hundreds of them! I can totally see her now. I’m sure my Dad was shaking his head while laughing hysterically at this whole thing. But she was determined. And around March 26th her water broke.

And it was pouring outside.

And a pipe burst in their apartment.

My Dad said something like “I’m surrounded by water!”

They drove to the hospital. At this time, women could still go under general anesthesia even without a c-section or any complications. So that's what she did. She woke up and my Dad was holding me. The rain had stopped and she got her wish. It was not April fools day.

And though this has nothing to do with my story, my Bubby (my Grandmom) rushed to the hospital to see her first (and only) grandchild. She came into my Mother’s hospital room and told my Mom how excited she was, especially that I was a girl. It was my Bubby’s dream. But, she had to add that while she was so happy and couldn’t wait to do all of the fun things she had planned, that after getting a good long look at me, that my Mom simply “Didn’t put enough into it.” I looked absolutely nothing like her. And of course my Mom was confused and once again my Dad was hysterical.

It’s stuff like this, especially during a time like this that keeps me going and makes me smile. Living with these two amazing people, I had the time of my life and I wish they were both still around.

So every April fools day, I am always reminded of my beautiful, amazing and very funny Mother. I think the reason my Mom was so funny is because she had absolutely no idea just how funny she actually was. I simply adored her…

Happy April Fools Day Everyone! This day could have a whole different meaning to me had it not been for rain storms, jumping jacks and one determined woman.
