‘No Exit.’ For Three Narcissists. An Interesting Thought.

Have any of you seen the stage play by Jean-Paul Sartre? It is called ‘No Exit.’

I was just discussing this play and Sarte’s philosophy with a very good friend. We were discussing the true meaning behind this brilliant work of art.

No Exit opens with its three main characters—Garcin, Inez, and Estelle—being led into an old-fashioned living room. They don’t know each other, but they do know that they’re dead and now in hell. Hell isn’t what any of them expected, however. Where are the horned devils with pitchforks? A burning fire that encompasses them for all of eternity? Is this infact hell?

After quickly getting on each other’s nerves, so much so that it is hell within itself, Inez realizes the truth about their situation: “Each of us will act as torturer of the two others!”

These three people had a very different idea of what hell would be…never expecting that three people locked together in a room for eternity could cause more chaos, havoc and evil than the devil himself.

That is the very best interpretation I can give of what three narcissists locked in a room together would be.
