The Reason that I have always loved Drew Barrymore.

Drew Barrymore is someone who I have always loved and felt a strong connection to.

It was not so much that we are the same age and similar in many ways (people have actually told me that over the years.) We are both entertainers and extremely outgoing. I felt this connection to her as a little girl watching the movie E.T. and I still feel exactly the same.

Though I never struggled with substance abuse, I had my own struggles once upon a time (who hasn’t?)

Drew Barrymore (unbeknownst to her) has taught me quite a lot.

Let’s just say Drew did not start out with the most glorious upbringing. In her 1991 autobiography ‘Little Girl Lost, Barrymore recounted early memories of her abusive father, who left the family when she was just six months old. She and her Father never had anything resembling a significant relationship and seldom spoke to each other.

Her family showed her little to no love at all. She is quoted as saying (regarding Steven Spielberg, her Godfather) as “the first person who ever really loved me.”

She was most definitely lost and started experimenting with drugs at an extremely early age. She was placed in a rehab at the age of 13, and spent eighteen months in an institution for the mentally ill. A suicide attempt at 14 put her back in rehab, followed by a three-month stay with singer David Crosby and his wife.

“The stay was precipitated, (Crosby said,) because she needed to be around some people that were committed to sobriety.” Barrymore later described this period of her life as well as her feelings about it in her autobiography, ‘Little Girl Lost.’

After a successful juvenile court petition for emancipation, she moved into her own apartment at the age of 15.

She has had many failed relationships throughout her life, but from her last marriage, has two beautiful daughters.

She completely turned her life around…she is as authentic as they come!

She has her own talk show now. I try to catch it if I’m awake. She loves all sorts of things. Make-up. Design, especially DIY. She is a great cook too, always trying new and creative dishes, and when she is talking to someone, she is totally and completely present. She is always so interested in each and every person she is interviewing…famous or not.

She definitely has flair! And the most sparkling, wonderful personality! You can’t help but love her…(at least that’s how I feel.)

We are the same age and have the same personality type. (ENFP.) She is a total free spirit. She says whatever she is thinking and she is always kind. Always.

She could have turned out to be a totally different person. Angry. Bitter. Just like we read about all of the time, but instead, she not only made something of herself, she does it with kindness and humor. She is warm, fun, real, always smiling and I know it has only just begun for her. She is someone to be admired and an example to anyone who had a terrible childhood and in spite of it, turned into one of the kindest people (at least from what I can tell) who I have witnessed in a very long time.

Bravo Drew! You are loved by many…including me.
