Any person who takes great pleasure in hurting another can not be happy with themselves. A genuinely happy person is happy when they make others happy.
A narcissist can not conceive of such a thing. Even if they consider you to be a “friend.” You can be successful…just not more successful than they are. You can be popular…well liked…but if you are getting more attention then the narcissist, there’s going to be trouble. Interesting…since deep, deep down they despise themselves. But they put on an excellent show. An academy award portrayal of the “good guy/girl.”
And they do a very convincing job too. Very convincing. If you do not see for yourself what someone who has witnessed their betrayal and hatred has experienced firsthand, you won’t believe it. That is how good they have gotten at keeping that mask up at all times. What a truly exhausting thought….

There is something fundamentally wrong with any human being who takes pleasure in another's misfortune….that, right there is proof that they are miserable.
